The Golden Sombrero’s Top 50 Prospects: #5 – Domonic Brown (Video)

#5 Domonic Brown – Philadelphia Phillies

OF

DOB: 9-3-87

ETA: 2011

As the top corner outfield prospect in the game, Domonic Brown is insanely athletic and posted terrific numbers in 2010.  His slash line of .327/.391/.589, 20 HR’s, and 17 SB’s across Double-A and Triple-A hint at the kind of power/speed combo that will one day be showcased at Citizens Bank.  However, Brown’s best tool is his arm, and he may make Jayson Werth forgettable in Philadelphia one day.

Brown is not a finished product, though, and while he has outgrown the Minor Leagues, he is still a project.  His strike-zone judgment and length to the ball make him susceptible to numerous pitching sequences and styles designed to exploit his weaknesses (an inability to both drive good inside fastballs and soft, tight, same-side breaking stuff).  Brown also, despite being very fast, has taken some circuitous routes in the outfield since being selected in the 20th round of the 2006 draft.

Nevertheless, when we consider value, his $200,000 bonus is far cheaper than one would expect from a top-5 prospect.  The Phillies may have a bargain gem on their hands in Brown, but he is not Jason Heyward.  He should be really, really good, though.
