The Golden Sombrero’s Top 50 Prospects: #49 – J.P. Arencibia

#49 J.P. Arencibia – Toronto Blue Jays

C/DH

DOB: 1/5/1986

ETA: 2011

Arencibia has unusual power for a backstop, as evidenced by his 32 jacks and 69 hits for extra bases in only 412 AAA at-bats in 2010.  While it is a safe bet that Arencibia never walks enough to become a truly elite hitter, that kind of thump can play well all over the field.  It will have to because no one, including the Jays, thinks he can stick behind the plate as a primary catcher at the Major League level.  Nevertheless, the Jays seem at least open to the idea of utilizing him primarily as a DH with the versatility to get behind the dish occasionally.  In another organization he might have value as a corner infielder as well.
