The Golden Sombrero’s Top 50 Prospects: #44 – Nolan Arenado

#44 Nolan Arenado – Colorado Rockies

3B

DOB: 4-16-91

ETA: 2013

Arenado, a 19-year old power bat, put up an excellent slash line (.308/.338/.520) in Class-A Ashville in 2010, and likely will start 2011 in Double-A, with a chance at the Majors in late 2012 if he continues to hit and play replacement level defense at third.  Most scouts seem very reserved about their belief in Arenado’s glove, but his bat is probably one of the 10 or 15 best in the Minors today.  He is not in the same class as Brandon Belt, Eric Hosmer, or Mike Moustakas, but he may be comparable to Freddie Freeman in relation to other CIF prospects in terms of hitting ability.  His pitch selection has room to grow, and his power is mostly gap now, but he has time to develop.  Even if Arenado cannot stay at third, he is looking like more and more of a second-round steal with every at bat.
