The Golden Sombrero’s Top 50 Prospects: #34 – Kyle Gibson (Video)

#34 Kyle Gibson – Minnesota Twins

RHP

DOB: 10-23-87

ETA: 2011

Kyle Gibson is the rare pitching prospect whose secondary stuff is better than his fastball.  At the age of 22, Gibson pitched at three levels in 2010 including three quality outings at Triple-A Rochester.  The 6’6” righty recently received an invite to Major League Spring Training and, if all goes according to plan, should be in the Bigs by the middle of 2011 so long as a spot exists for him in the rotation.  He posted a sub-3.00 ERA in 2010 and already shows remarkable polish for a youngster.  He has a chance at 2-plus pitches with a solid, average third.

With size, skills, and age on his side, Gibson should ultimately slot nicely behind ace Francisco Liriano at Target Field for the foreseeable future.  However, his style on the mound may never be dominant enough to achieve true ace status.  Still, there is a lot to look forward to in Minneapolis with Gibson, Aaron Hicks, Ben Revere, and Miguel Sano, who all are within the 100 best prospects in baseball.
