The Golden Sombrero’s Top 50 Prospects: #37 – Jonathan Singleton (Video)

#37 Jonathan Singleton – Philadelphia Phillies

1B

DOB: 9-18-91

ETA: 2013

As just an 18-year old in the South Atlantic League, Jonathan Singleton put up a slash line of .290/.393/.479 while walking 62 times and only striking out 74 times in around 460 plate appearances.  He went deep 14 times and had over 40 hits for extra bases.  His strike zone judgment is uniquely advanced for his age, and his bat speed and body project as an impact corner outfielder or infielder in the Majors within the next few years.  With Ryan Howard manning first base in Philadelphia through at least 2014, it is hard to see Singleton contributing much anywhere but the farm for the foreseeable future, but he is young enough to potentially convert to the outfield full-time.  He will never run well enough to be an above average outfielder, but his bat plays anywhere, and Citizens Bank is a good place for a slow dude to man left.  It will be interesting to see what Philadelphia does with Singleton in 2011.
