Around The League: Adam Dunn’s arrival, Ron Santo’s legacy, Milledge non-tendered, and more…

  • As a Chicago White Sox fan, I am still in total shock over the signing of Adam Dunn, as well as the re-signing of A.J. Pierzynski.  What makes the news even better is the fact that they both accepted back loaded contracts so that the organization may still potentially re-sign Paul Konerko.  Furthermore, it appears that Kenny Williams and the White Sox are finally shaking up the bullpen after non-tendering Bobby Jenks and trading Scott Linebrink. • The baseball world lost a true legend this week, as Ron Santo passed away at 70-years of age.  His lasting impact on the game, the Chicago Cubs organization, and city of Chicago goes above and beyond anything that you will read in a newspaper or on a blog.  Ron Santo will forever be at the heart of Chicago Cubs baseball and he will be sorely missed.  Thanks for all the great memories, Ronnie. Marlins Announcers: “We Traded…Dan Uggla!” (Video)

Ok, so they didn’t actually say that, but you have to imagine that the Florida Marlins’ announcing tandem of Rich Waltz and Tommy Hutton were instantly devastated upon learning that the organization had traded Dan Uggla.  No longer will they be able to deliver their patented home run call, “His name is Dan Uggla!”

Soon, Marlins fans will have the joy of hearing, “His name is Omar Infante!” Granted, it will only be, roughly, eight to nine times per year, and for the sole purpose of informing the fan base that they have a new player.

A Letter to Edgar Renteria

Dear Edgar Renteria,

As a Cardinals fan and admirer of most of your work in St. Louis, I want to take the time to congratulate you on winning the World Series and MVP honors.  You’ve had a tough career recently, what with your struggles in the American League and the recent trips to the DL.  But you came through for your team when it mattered most, and I respect that.  However, something has been bothering me the last few days, and I hope you don’t mind if I give you a short history lesson which isn’t in chronological order (otherwise it ruins the punchline, so just go with it), followed by a very simple question.

The Golden Sombrero presents Rookie Card Corner: Edgar Renteria 1994 Bowman

Fun Fact: In his 15-year career, Edgar Renteria has collected 2,522 hits.  However, he has never had a season with more than 200 hits.  His highest, single-season hit total came in 2003 when he had 194 with the St. Louis Cardinals.

A Tragic End to Tyler Colvin’s Rookie Campaign (Video)

As Chicago Cubs rookie Tyler Colvin crossed home and walked towards the dugout, those watching at home could clearly read his lips when he was approached by the trainer, “I’m bleeding.”  For the next half hour, frightening rumors circulated throughout the online baseball community, fueled by headlines like, “Tyler Colvin impaled by broken bat,” that seemingly left everyone assuming the worst about the youngster.  It seemed that it would only be a matter of minutes until we were seeing photos of Colvin, laying on the ground with the barrel of a bat embedded in his chest.
