The Best Baseball Commercials, Part 4: Seattle Mariners

Part 4 of my series is dedicated to the Seattle Mariners. Technically, it should really be dedicated to one of the toughest looking players in baseball history, Jay Buhner. Many years ago I saw a Mariners’ commercial that featured Jay Buhner, using his shiny, bald head to reflect sunlight into the opposing hitter’s eyes. I know, genius.

Since then, I have been unable to find it despite my best efforts combing the intraweb and plugging keywords like: “bald guy,” and “sweet jesus look at that bald guy!” into every major search engine. Luckily, much like that Buhner commercial, the Mariners have made plenty of other classic commercials, many starring some of the better players of the past 2 decades.

The Best Baseball Commercials, Part 3: St. Louis Cardinals

Every time I attempt to consolidate a specific amount of videos for an article within this series, I am divided over which videos are worthy of the cut. In my opinion, there simply isn’t a bad baseball commercial out there; each video is hilarious or unique for some reason or another. Over the past decade, the emergence of team commercials have provided baseball fans with an opportunity to get to know some of their favorite players, on their favorite teams. For as much pride as these players’ possess in playing for their team, it seems that they possess an equal amount of pride representing their team through these commercials.

I’m No Dope, I’ve Got Adderall

While professional athletes ditching gold digging trophy wives is no novel concept, the recent divorce proceedings of Kansas City Royals catcher Jason Kendall and his estranged wife Chantel have remained frequent fodder for internet gossip sites like TMZ and RadarOnline and even recently made the jump to websites not concerned with the latest atrocious parenting of Jon and Kate Gosselin. While this could have something to do with steamy particulars involving the love triangle of a pro athlete, a smokin’ hot babe and the son of a rock-n-roll legend (Chantel is currently dating Sean Stewart, son of Rod Stewart), the focus of the tittle-tattle so far has been Chantel accusing her husband of abusing the drug Adderall, which subsequently led to him both physically and emotionally abusing her.

A Look at the Surging Texas Rangers

I told a couple of friends at school who are Dallas locals that I would write occasionally about the Rangers this summer.  Today seems like a pretty reasonable day to do that considering that they now sit comfortably atop their own division and tied with the New York Yankees for first in the American League.  As a fan of the game and someone who follows the draft and the minor leagues to some extent, it comes as no surprise to see the Rangers doing so well.  It was regarded as almost laughable by many of my friends from Dallas when I suggested that the Rangers were playoff-bound in 2010.  Despite coming within shouting distance last season, the Rangers most recent playoff appearance came in 1999, and they have never won a pennant.  While I think they may be a move from securing what I think would be a top 3 team in baseball, everyone with an inquisitive mind understands that the playoffs are a roll of the dice, and once in, any team has a shot.  Barring injury, these Rangers seem like a lock for a playoff berth even without a major upgrade at the deadline.
