Around The League: R.I.P. Bob Feller; Fox News Analyst: Luke Scott; Francouer/Melky; Rule 5 Draft

  • The Mourning Journal is reporting that the baseball world lost yet another legend on late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning, as Bob Feller has passed away at the age of 92.  Earlier in the day it was reported that Feller had been moved into hospice care in Cleveland, and now comes the potentially heartbreaking news of the Hall of Famer’s death several hours later. *I am still seeking further confirmation on this story, check back for updates* [Mourning Journal]
  • I’m sure that Atlanta Braves’ fans had a good laugh yesterday after learning that the Kansas City Royals had signed both Jeff Francoeur and Melky Cabrera.  If the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox made a splash in the free agent market, then one would have to assume that the Royals are floating face down. [MLB Trade Rumors]
  • The always bat-shit-crazy Luke Scott took the time to give David Brown another candid interview on Wednesday at the Winter Meetings.  It turns out that the gun-toting, buck hunter is also a “birther.” I know, shocker. [Big League Stew]

  • The Orioles issued a response to Scott’s delusional remarks, “Luke Scott‘s comments do not reflect the opinion of the Baltimore Orioles organization. The fact is that Barack Obama is our President, duly elected by the people of the United States. End of story.” I agree, it’s probably the most ambiguous statement ever. [ESPN]
  • The Rule 5 Draft is set for Thursday morning at 9 a.m. ET, with live coverage of the event will be available on MLB.com. [Jonathon Mayo]
  • I70Baseball takes a look at baseball’s most interesting game of 2010: the 20-inning marathon between the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals.  As they point out, this epic game had its fair share of La Russa inspired facepalms… [I70Baseball]

  • This week I began working with both the Illinois and Missouri divisions of Prep Baseball Report, and needless to say, I’m quite excited about the future of our relationship.  I can’t say enough great things about the people running their operations and sincerely encourage everyone to head over to the site and browse through some of the nation’s top prep prospects.  I also wrote an introductory post for my new blog on their site, so be sure to check it out. • Arizona Diamondbacks’ GM Kevin Towers is at it again, this time re-signing Mike Hampton and on the verge of signing catcher Henry Blanco.  As I was sitting around watching a Cubs game several years ago, when Blanco was still a part of the organization, a friend asserted, “Man, I bet Blanco rips the nastiest ass in the dugout.” To this day, I can’t but help but invoke that image whenever I hear his name.
