Yesterday morning the United States netted the most important goal in American history in the 91^st minute against an Algerian team that was supposed to suck.  Despite how bad they were supposed to be, they certainly challenged the Americans to their absolute limit.  This World Cup has seen the French and Italians both eliminated before the round of 16 as well as the Redcoats desperately needing a goal against Slovenia to make it out of group play.  The World Cup, because of the time zone it is being played in, has been televised in it’s entirety here in the States.  For maybe the first time in my life, I get the feeling people over here genuinely care.  I’m not even sure that it’s completely because the States have such a compelling team this year.  I think America may finally be giving soccer the chance it deserves.

As I eluded to in Part I, the second installment of, “The Best Baseball Commercials,” is dedicated to my favorite baseball, video game commercials. The first baseball game that I remember becoming totally obsessed with was ‘Sports Talk Baseball’ for Sega Genesis. I know that Rob possesses a similar endless love for this game, considering we spent most of the summer of 2008 barricaded inside, playing it non-stop while screaming at each other. Since ‘Sports Talk’ burst onto the scene in 1991, I think that it’s fair to say that the quality of baseball games has improved, a lot. As games have become more complex and sophisticated, the marketing has followed suit by producing witty commercials starring some of baseball’s most popular players. The genuine quirkiness of each player gives the lasting impression that they are having a blast, and proud to be a part of it. Each commercial is a constant reminder that major league baseball players are human.

Other than seeing someone get kicked in the ballsack, there is nothing more hilarious than a quality baseball commercial. There is just something about seeing a professional baseball player reduced to the goofy child that he really is that makes me respect them in a unique way.  As a youngster growing up in the ‘90s, I was privileged to witness the rise of ESPN, their programming and the hilarious commercials that they produced to stay ahead of their competitors. Specifically, it was the commercials that they used for Wednesday and Sunday Night Baseball, as well as the occasional Baseball Tonight clip, that remain a centerpiece in my baseball recall.
