R.I.P. Leslie Nielsen (Video)

On Sunday night, we learned that actor Leslie Nielsen had passed away due to complications from pneumonia.  Nielsen, 84, always held a special place in the heart of all baseball fans thanks his performance in “The Naked Gun,” when he both sang “The National Anthem,” and umpired a game between the California Angels and Seattle Mariners.  Rest in peace, Drebin.

Jesus Montero Takes Batting Practice (Video)

Over the course of past two seasons, I have come to believe that people’s familiarity with New York Yankees catching prospect, Jesus Montero, is more a result of Jorge Posada’s legacy than it is Montero’s young, professional career.  However, with the news that the 39-year old Posada will serve as the teams designated hitter in 2011, it appears that Montero will get the nod and finally have an opportunity to distance himself from his predecessor.

The switch-hitting Montero, who turns 21 on November 28, put together a solid season for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barr, hitting .289/.353/.517 with 34 doubles, three triples, 21 home runs, and 75 RBI.  Here are several videos of Montero taking batting practice from 2009 and 2010:

Mike Moustakas Takes Batting Practice (Video)

There is a reason that Kansas City Royals seemed indifferent about their lack of production at the hot corner in 2010, and that reason is Mike Moustakas.  Drafted second overall by the Royals in the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft, Moustakas put together a monstrous 2010 Minor League season, hitting .322 with 41 doubles, 36 home runs and 124 RBI while splitting time between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha.  He also showed great discipline at the dish, drawing 34 walks and striking out only 67 times in 484 at-bats.

Joey Votto runs away with NL MVP (Video)

[courtesy of @CincinnatiReds]

On Monday afternoon, Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto was named the 2010 National League MVP after receiving 31 of 32 first-place votes.  For those who watched Votto closely this season, the prestigious recognition comes as no surprise considering that he was the most impressive hitter in the NL and arguably in all of baseball.

Nobody covers the Reds like my man Clint over at Diamond Hoggers, and here is what he had say after Votto was announced as MVP:
