Today on The Baseball Show, co-host Clint Evans of Diamond Hoggers and I discuss recent trades and headlines across baseball, and even seamlessly weave in a Brooks Kieschnick reference.  The Mike Napoli trade gives us a reason to remember Frank Francisco hurling a chair into a dude’s face at the Oakland Coliseum.  I guess a picture really does say a thousand words in certain situations. You know, those situations when you’re a Major League bullpen pitcher and a fight (with fans) breaks out, calms down, and you decide to start tossing chairs at helpless spectators. On Wednesday night, co-host Clint Evans from Diamond Hoggers and I were back at it with 2011’s first episode of The Baseball Show.

Topics include:

• Our thoughts on Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven’s selection to the Hall of Fame.

• We weigh in on some of the other notable players – Barry Larkin, Fred McGriff, Jeff Bagwell, and Edgar Martinez – who either came up just short in the voting or failed to receive adequate support.

• We talk about the man (kind of), the myth, the legend…Bryce Harper.  Could we see Harper in D.C. in 2011? Probably not, but we entertain the idea and suggest several hypothetical scenarios.

• Who was the winner in the Matt Garza trade? We explore his concerning 2010 performance as well as assess the slew of prospects that were shipped off by the Cubs.

In his first televised professional at-bat, 18-year old Bryce Harper ripped an RBI single to put the Scottsdale Scorpions ahead 2-1, in the Arizona Fall League Championship.  Harper came to the plate in the bottom of the second inning with one out and Diamondbacks outfielder Marc Krauss on second base.  Harper got straight to business, ripping Kyle Greenwalt’s first pitch fastball past an outstretched Jose Iglesias at shortstop.

Bryce Harper will finally make his highly anticipated television debut on Saturday afternoon, as the Scottsdale Scorpions take on the Peoria Javelinas for the Arizona Fall League Championship.  The Scorpions will attempt to derail the Javelinas, who are seeking their second consecutive title and are lead by the 2^nd overall pick in the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft, Dustin Ackley.

In a game that is loaded with some of the most exciting young players in all of baseball, all eyes will inevitably be on the 18-year old Harper, who is now in today’s starting lineup. Despite the skepticism surrounding the Nationals’ decision to send their 1^st overall selection in the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft to the AFL, Harper has continued to show that he can handle virtually every situation, on and off the field.
