Why Rockies Chris Nelson’s steal of home was more than a Nick Masset blunder (Video)

I have always considered the stealing of home to be one the most exciting plays in baseball.  Maybe it’s because I grew up watching “The Sandlot,” and had Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez embedded into my memory at an impressionable age, but there’s just something about the accomplishment that makes you rise out of your seat on the couch with anticipation, just as if you were in a seat at the park.  It’s one of those plays that happens so unpredictably fast, that it’s over before anyone knew it even began.

Yet, when Colorado Rockies rookie Chris Nelson stole home in the eighth inning of Thursday’s victory against the Cincinnati Reds, I found myself seated, and more than anything, confused about what had just happened.  A rookie, stealing home—the 1st of his career, nonetheless—in a tie game, in the heart of a pennant race.  Excweese me? Bacon Powder?

Audio from Thursday’s appearance on B-Squared Show

Thanks to 312Sports.com, the B-Squared Show, and especially the hosts–Bedo and Bernfield–for having me on their radio show this morning.  They first had me on as a guest shortly after the Sombrero was launched in March 2010, and it was great to get back on the air and talk baseball with them today.

Today’s discussion focused on the Chicago White Sox and whether they still have a legitimate chance of making the playoffs.  Want to know what I think about the Sox chances?

Be sure to check out the audio segment from today’s show:

Sidney Crosby goes yard at PNC during batting practice (Video)

Yes, you read that correctly.  Prior to Wednesday night’s game against the visiting Atlanta Braves, NHL superstar Sidney Crosby took batting practice at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, and impressively failed to humiliate himself.  In fact, he did quite the opposite. Sid went yard.

He turned on a pitch, lining into the right field bleachers where it then one hopped a stair, and bounced out of the stadium.

Guest appearance on B-Squared radio show, Thurs at 10:30am cst

I will be making my second appearance on the B-Squared Show on Thursday morning, at 10:30am, cst.

The B-Squared Show is an online radio show, hosted by the Chicago sports site 312Sports.com, that covers all things sports but with an emphasis on Chicago teams.

Whether you are a baseball fan or not, I highly encourage everyone to tune in to the B-Squared Show on weekdays from 10am-noon.  The show’s hosts, Bedo and Bernfield, always have a great variety of  guests, offer excellent analysis, and in general, do a tremendous job day in and day out.

I’d like to thank them in advance for having me on the show again and I will hopefully have the audio available later in the day.

On Tuesday night Trevor Hoffman reached the remarkable milestone of 600 saves when the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 at Miller Park.  Hoffman has always been regarded as a class act and has solidified himself as a Hall of Famer well before last night’s achievement.

The Golden Sombrero congratulates Trevor Hoffman on his unparalleled, 600th career save.

Here is a classic Sports Illustrated cover from May 13, 2002:
