Top 50 Prospects: #38 – Wil Myers

#38 Wil Myers

Kansas City Royals

DOB: 12/10/1990

Previous Rank: 15

ETA: 2013

Myers was ranked considerably higher last year, but a tough season in the Texas League as a 20-year-old has knocked him back a bit.  A triple slash line of .254/.353/.393 wouldn’t look nearly as bad if he was still behind the dish, but those numbers from a corner guy are far less impressive.  Nevertheless, he was a 20-year old in a very advanced league for someone that age, and all of the tools are still present.  Additionally he missed about a month of the first half due to a freak knee injury.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of Myers 2011 is that he has been arguably the best player in the AFL with a ridiculous line of .380/.500/.722 and 14 XBHs.  Myers continues to receive rave reviews for his discipline and eye at the plate, and his arm still grades as a 60 at least in right.  The bat speed is still there now that he is healthy, and his bat track should produce home runs as he matures.

His foot speed is more than enough to handle a corner outfield position as well, and there is a realistic chance that he will bring about 10 steals to the Royals offense during the early part of his Major League career, which we at The Sombrero anticipate beginning within the next year and a half.  Look For Myers somewhere in next year’s top 10 if he has a healthy 2012 and maintains rookie status.
