Golden Sombrero: Paul Goldschmidt (again)

Top 2: Paul Goldschmidt struck out swinging against Clayton Kershaw

Top 4: called out on strikes against Kershaw

Top 7: struck out swinging against Josh Lindblom

Top 9: struck out swinging against Kenley Jansen

Final Line: 0-for-4, 4 K

Notes: Playing in his 38th game since being called up by the Diamondbacks, Goldschmidt tallied his second golden sombrero of the season against the Dodgers on Wednesday night.  One would have thought that Kershaw’s ejection might have prevented his sombrero, especially considering that Goldschmidt fanned in both of his at-bats against the southpaw.  But the big man stayed true to his power-hitting form, fanning in his final two at-bats to finish the job.  Be sure to check back for an awesome Paul Goldschmidt-inspired graphic when he makes his inevitable postseason debut in October. That’s the most I can divulge without totally giving it away – Dee and our friend Eat-A-Ton might know where I’m going with this.

Golden Sombrero: Danny Espinosa (again)

Bottom 1: Danny Espinosa struck out on a foul tip against Hiroki Kuroda

Bottom 4: struck out swinging against Kuroda

Bottom 6: struck out swinging against Kuroda

Bottom 8: struck out swinging against Ramon Troncoso

Final Line: 0-for-4, 4 K

Notes: Espinosa’s golden sombrero against the Dodgers on Monday was his second in the past week, as the rookie continues to fan at a worrisome rate.  On Tuesday, he struck out in three of his four at-bats, which means that Espinosa has now fanned in seven of his last eight at-bats.

Total 2011 Sombreros: 106

Golden Sombrero: Brian McCann

Bottom 1: Brian McCann struck out swinging against Nate Eovaldi

Bottom 4: walked against Eovaldi

Bottom 6: struck out swinging against Eovaldi

Bottom 8: struck out swinging against Kenley Jansen

Bottom 10: struck out swinging against Javy Guerra

Final Line: 0-for-4, BB, 4 K

Notes: The Braves’ All-Star catcher recorded his first golden sombrero of the 2011 season on Saturday against the Dodgers.  A slew of Dodger pitchers held the Braves offense in check, as they were able to push across one run on seven hits in the 10-inning loss. Despite missing time due to a strained oblique, McCann still has dropped 23 bombs this season, and should surpass his career high of 24 with ease.

MLB Look-alikes: Frank McCourt and James Cameron

The Golden Sombrero presents MLB Look-alikes: Frank McCourt and James Cameron

Thanks to our friend Cool Breeze for pointing this one out! Dead on.

One of these guys has more money than the other…

Golden Sombrero: Adam Dunn

Bottom 1: Adam Dunn struck out swinging against Jon Garland

Bottom 3: Dunn struck out on foul tip against Garland

Bottom 4: Dunn walked against Ramon Troncoso

Bottom 6: Dunn struck out swinging against Troncoso

Bottom 8: Dunn called out on strikes against Lance Cormier

Final Line: 0-4, 4K, BB

Notes: Dunn, who has yet to record a hit off a left-hander this season, was the only White Sox starter without a hit on Saturday.  Furthermore, the White Sox only struck out five times as a team, four of which belonged to Dunn. The slugger is now hitting a dismal .190 this season.
