Golden Sombrero: Evan Longoria

Top 1: Evan Longoria called out on strikes against Felipe Paulino

Top 3: Longoria singled to left against Paulino

Top 5: Longoria stuck out swinging against Paulino

Top 6: Longoria called out on strikes against Blake Wood

Top 8: Longoria struck out swinging against Louis Coleman

Final Line: 1-for-5, RBI, 4 K, 7 LOB

Notes: Although the game went well for the Rays—5-0 win—the same can’t be said for Longo.  Now hitting .242 on the season, Longoria fanned in four of his five at-bats on Sunday, and left seven runners on base in the process.  He also committed a throwing error, but luckily it didn’t spoil Alex Cobb’s gem.

Total 2011 Sombreros: 73

Golden Sombrero: Brent Lillibridge

Bottom 2: Brent Lillibridge struck out swinging against Felipe Paulino

Bottom 3: Lillibridge struck out swinging against Paulino

Bottom 5: Lillibridge struck out swinging against Paulino

Bottom 7: Lillibridge struck out swinging against Louis Coleman

Final Line: 0-for-4, 4 K, 7 LOB

Notes: Lillibridge looked absolutely clueless at the plate on Tuesday night against the Royals.  It was one of those games where you let the good pitches go by and chase nothing but garbage.  What was most impressive about little Brent’s sombrero, was that he managed to accomplish the feat on only 15 pitches.

Total 2011 Sombreros: 63

Golden Sombrero: Alex Gordon (again)

Top 1: Alex Gordon struck out swinging against Jake Peavy

Top 3: Gordon struck out swinging against Peavy

Top 5: Gordon flew out to left against Peavy

Top 7: Gordon struck out swinging against Will Ohman

Top 9: Gordon struck out swinging against Chris Sale

Final Line: 0-for-5, 4 K

Notes: Gordon’s golden sombrero against the White Sox on Tuesday night was his second of the season.  As one of five players on the Final Vote ballot for the American League, Gordon certainly didn’t help his chances of getting voted through, especially considering Paul Konerko was 3-for-5 with a bomb and two RBI.

Total 2011 Sombreros: 62

Golden Sombrero: Juan Nicasio

Bottom 2: Juan Nicasio struck out swinging against Danny Duffy

Bottom 4: Nicasio struck out swinging against Duffy

Bottom 6: Nicasio struck out on a foul tip against Nathan Adcock

Bottom 7: Nicasio struck out swinging against Adcock

Final Line: 0-for-4, 4 K

Notes: Nicasio’s golden sombrero on Friday night was the third by a pitcher this year — all of which have come in a start lasting 8+ innings.  In his win over the Royals, the rookie right-hander hurled 8 shutout frames, allowed three hits, walked two and fanned four.  As promising as his career on the bump may be, the outlook isn’t as bright for Nicasio at the dish.  In his 13 at-bats this season, he’s struck out nine times.  He’s also mixed in two doubles, which can surely be attributed to luck.

Total 2011 Sombreros: 59

Golden Sombrero: Jeff Francoeur (again)

Top 2: Jeff Francouer struck out swinging against Tim Stauffer

Top 4: Francoeur struck out swinging against Stauffer

Top 6: Francouer called out on strikes against Stauffer

Top 8: Francoeur struck out swinging against Chad Qualls

Final Line: 0-for-4, 4 K

Notes: Frenchy’s sombrero on Wednesday was his second of the season, as he accounted for four of the Royals six strikeouts in the game.  He is also the fifth player to notch multiple sombreros this season.
