Golden Sombrero: Chase d’Arnaud

Top 1: Chase d’Arnaud struck out swinging against Wandy Rodriguez

Top 3: d’Arnaud called out on strikes against W. Rodriguez

Top 4: d’Arnaud struck out swinging against W. Rodriguez

Top 6: d’Arnaud struck out swinging against Fernando Rodriguez

Top 9: d’Arnaud grounded out to shortstop against Mark Melancon

Top 11: d’Arnaud grounded out to third base against Aneury Rodriguez

Final Line: 0-for-6, 4 K

Notes: It was a tough night for the Pirates’ rookie infielder on Sunday night, as d’Arnaud went hitless in six at-bats and wore the sombrero.  Typically a sombrero is a made possible by extra innings.  In this game, however, d’Arnaud had already completed the feat by the sixth inning, and somehow managed to avoid wearing the platinum sombrero from there on out.

Total 2011 Sombreros: 70

*How is it that there wasn’t some sort of sombrero in Sunday night’s marathon between the Red Sox and Rays??

Golden Sombrero: Cole Garner

Top 2: Cole Garner struck out swinging against Jordan Zimmerman

Top 5: Garner struck out swinging against Zimmerman

Top 7: Garner struck out swinging against Ryan Mattheus

Top 9: Garner struck out swinging against Drew Storen

Final Line: 0-for-4, 4 K

Notes: I’ll be honest: I had no idea who Cole Garner was prior to his sombrero on Sunday.  In his six at-bats for the Rockies this season, Garner has fanned six times. I’m impressed, but for the wrong reasons.

Total 2011 Sombreros: 69

Golden Sombrero: Jim Thome

Top 2: Jim Thome struck out swinging against Mark Buehrle

Top 4: Thome called out on strikes against Buehrle

Top 6: Thome struck out swinging against Buehrle

Top 9: Thome struck out swinging against Jesse Crain

Final Line: 0-for-4, 4 K

Notes: The novelty of a Jim Thome golden sombrero faded a long time ago, as the 40-year-old veteran is second on the all-time strikeout list with 2,431 – only 166 behind Reggie Jackson.  Thome’s also five home runs shy of joining the 600 HR club.

Total 2011 Sombreros: 68

Golden Sombrero: Matt Tolbert

Top 2: Matt Tolbert struck out swinging against Gavin Floyd

Top 4: Tolbert singled to center against Floyd

Top 5: Tolbert struck out swinging against Will Ohman

Top 7: Tolbert called out on strikes against Brian Bruney

Top 9: Tolbert struck out swinging against Jesse Crain

Final Line: 1-for-5, 4 K, 5 LOB

Notes: Tolbert’s sombrero on Friday against the White Sox was his first of the season, although his fourth inning single did snap a 1-for-20 skid.  Dating back to June 15th, Tolbert is now two for his last 23 and is currently hitting .181.

Total 2011 Sombreros: 67

Golden Sombrero: Colby Rasmus

Bottom 2: Colby Rasmus struck out on a foul tip against Bronson Arroyo

Bottom 5: Rasums struck out swinging against Arroyo

Bottom 7: Rasmus singled to center against Arroyo

Bottom 8: Rasmus struck out swinging against Nick Masset

Bottom 10: Rasmus struck out swinging against Sam LeClure

Final Line: 1-for-5, R, 4 K

Notes: Once again, another golden sombrero made possible by an extra-inning game.  I’m kind of surprised that this is only Colby’s first of the season, considering that he repeatedly fails to adjust to a right-hander’s change up.
