James Shields and Rays plotting a faith-based conspiracy?

This has to be, without a doubt, one of the most ridiculous call-ins to a radio show that I have ever heard.  The scary part is that Linda the Quaker is actually dead serious with her contention that James Shields is only pitching Game 2 of the ALDS because he is Jewish, and that the decision was made by the Rays’ brass…who is also Jewish?

No, seriously.

Her argument is that Shields is pitching in the playoffs for no other reason than the fact that he’s Jewish (information that cannot be verified, anywhere). Furthermore, since the Rays owners are Jewish and, “it’s their faith, they support each other.”

I really can’t do the clip justice with my description; it really is that preposterous. Kudos to Steve Duemig at WDAE in Tampa for having the patience to talk with Linda, and not cave in to her child-like, backwoods ignorance.

Bizarre baseball injuries happen every season, whether it is Tom Glavine purging his airline food and injuring his ribs, Jeff Kent falling off of his motorcycle, Garrett Jones choking on a piece of meat, or Jeff Baker burning his ass after trying to light a fart on fire in the Cubs’ clubhouse.

They are part of the game just as much as the game itself.

After the Baltimore Orioles season finale on Sunday, Brian Roberts finally addressed the media as to why he hadn’t played since September 27th.  His explanation? That he hit himself in the helmet with his own bat and had been experiencing concussion-like symptoms since.

David Ortiz attempts to bunt, Ozzie Guillen amused (Video)

On Wednesday night, David Ortiz thought he was being sneaky when he attempted to bunt for hit against Freddy Garcia and the Chicago White Sox.  With the shift on like usual against the lefthanded slugger, Ortiz dropped down a bunt that landed next to Garcia, who fielded the ball cleanly and easily threw out Big Papi at first base.  While Garcia chuckled after the play, manager Ozzie Guillen simply could not contain himself:
