GIF of the Moment: Phil Humber’s Disbelief [#HumberGames]

As I mentioned last night on Twitter, today is Phillip Humber day at The Golden Sombrero.  As a baseball fan, a perfect game is worth celebrating, regardless if it comes at the expense of your favorite team.  Well, as a White Sox fan, great moments have been few and far between since Mark Buehrle’s perfecto in 2009.

On Saturday evening, all of the team’s struggles were forgotten when Humber tossed the 21st perfect game in baseball history.  Living on the East coast, I was blacked out from watching due to the Yankees-Red Sox nationally televised game.  However, that didn’t stop me from listening to the White Sox radio feed in my car, which, while not nearly as exciting as watching it unfold live, was still pretty damn amazing.

Do you have a story about Humber’s perfect game? Where were you? What were you doing? Are you still struggling to process that Humber (of all people) accomplished the extremely rare feat? Feel free to reach out to me on Twitter (@GoldenSombrero) and share thoughts, videos, or graphics, and I’ll do my best to include it as part of Phil Humber day.

Golden Sombrero: Adam Dunn (4/13/2012)

Date: April 13, 2012 vs. Detroit Tigers

Bottom 1: Adam Dunn struck out swinging against Max Scherzer (8 pitches)

Bottom 4: Dunn struck out swinging against Scherzer (6 pitches)

Bottom 6: Dunn called out on strikes against Scherzer (7 pitches)

Bottom 8: Dunn struck out swinging against Daniel Schlereth (9 pitches)

Final Line: 0-for-4, 4 K

RE24: -1.2

WPA: -0.083

Notes: Give the big man a break; he’s three true outcome type of guy. Plus, he saw 30 pitches over four at-bats, and that’s pretty damn amazing.

Total 2012 Sombreros: 4

Golden Sombrero: Matt Joyce (4/6/2012)

Date: April 6, 2012

Bottom 2: Matt Joyce struck out swinging against C.C. Sabathia (6 pitches)

Bottom 4: Joyce struck out swinging against Sabathia (4 pitches)

Bottom 6: Joyce struck out swinging against Sabathia (5 pitches)

Bottom 8: Called out on strikes against David Robertson (5 pitches)

Final Line: 0-for-4, 4 K

RE24: -1.1

WPA: -0.222

Notes: Clearly an off night for Joyce, who batted ninth in Joe Maddon’s ever-changing lineup mash-up. Okay, so he can’t really hit left-handers. But that doesn’t explain why Jeff Keppinger hit cleanup.

Total 2012 Sombreros: 3

Golden Sombrero: Matt Garza (4/12/2012)

Date: April 12, 2012 vs. Milwaukee Brewers

Bottom 3: Matt Garza struck out swinging (missed bunt) against Zack Greinke (3 pitches)

Bottom 4: Garza struck out swinging against Greinke (3 pitches)

Bottom 6: Garza struck out swinging against Manny Parra (7 pitches)

Bottom 8: Garza struck out swinging against Tim Dillard (4 pitches)

Final Line: 0-for-4, 4 K

RE24: -1.2; WPA: -0.033

Notes: Considering he scattered three hits and struck out over 8.2 innings, you can’t really blame Garza for wearing the Sombrero.

Total 2012 Sombreros: 2
