It has been an extremely long season for Matt Kemp and an even longer season for his fantasy owners.  Coming off All-Star caliber seasons in both 2008 and 2009, Kemp was regarded as a top 5 fantasy outfielder and top 10 overall player headed into the 2010 season.  According to ESPN, Kemp’s average draft position this season was 8.8, and the only other outfielder with a higher average draft position was the Milwaukee Brewers Ryan Braun(4.9).

Needless to say, Kemp has been a major disappointment in 2010, falling well short of the career highs–runs, hits, home runs, RBI, stolen bases, OPS–that he established in 2009.  With the season almost over, Kemp’s fantasy owners will be forced to reflect on their decision to draft him in the top 10, when players like Carl Crawford and Josh Hamilton were still available.

This morning, I made my first appearance as the new co-host of The Baseball Show.

Clint, the mastermind behind Diamond Hoggers–and a former collegiate baseball player, as well– was kind enough to invite me to join The Baseball Show as a co-host. Follow Diamond Hoggers on Twitter here, and be sure to bookmark the site. If you’re a fan of the work that we do here at The Golden Sombrero, I guarantee that you’ll enjoy it; it’s very similar in the fact that it’s written by a former player who is as die hard of a fan as there is around.

We go for about 90 minutes, talking everything from prospects, to the playoff chase, to social media night in St. Louis (and bloggers vs. official media types).

I had an absolute blast talking baseball with Clint in such depth, and couldn’t be more excited about the future of The Baseball Show.

If you could use one word to describe Adam LaRoche, what would it be?  For those that have had him on their fantasy team, I’m sure that you chose the correct answer, “streaky.”  For the record, I would have also accepted “hack-taker,” as well as “pain-in-the-ass,” and of course, “brother.”  To those fantasy owners who are unfamiliar with the LaRoche, he can be summed up like this: when he’s hot, he’s hot, and when he’s not, he’s…absolutely brutal.  Year after year, LaRoche’s M.O. remains the same: a slow starter who has a mediocre first half, followed by a blistering July and August, and ultimately finishes with respectable statistics.  Similarly, year after year, those familiar with the Diamondbacks’ first baseman are left asking, what if?  What if LaRoche finally rakes for an entire season?  What if he finally cuts down on the strikeouts?  As somebody who has extensively watched him play this season, I have realized that there will always be recognizable potential in a player who gets his hacks in.  That is why there always seems to be a surprising amount of fantasy owners, who target LaRoche as an ideal, late-round sleeper.  This year, I was one of them.

The 2010 Major League Baseball trade deadline has come and gone and once again ended with GMs shouting out deals back and forth as frenetically as Wall Street floor traders. The two biggest names dealt before today’s deadline were pitchers Cliff Lee and Roy Oswalt. Lee has turned into quite the vagabond as of late, heading from Cleveland to Philly to Seattle and finally to the Texas Rangers all within the last two seasons. Seattle got switch hitting first baseman Justin Smoak and three minor league prospects out of the deal.
