{"id":5952,"date":"2012-02-15T08:30:38","date_gmt":"2012-02-15T14:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/?p=5952"},"modified":"2012-02-15T04:39:11","modified_gmt":"2012-02-15T10:39:11","slug":"spring-training-prospect-invitations-miami-marlins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/archives\/5952","title":{"rendered":"Spring Training Prospect Invitations: Miami Marlins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/kyle_jensen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5953\" title=\"kyle_jensen\" src=\"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/kyle_jensen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/kyle_jensen.jpg 300w, http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/kyle_jensen-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Spring Training rapidly approaches and speculation surrounding the future of baseball\u2019s brightest prospects spreads like wildfire, The Golden Sombrero will highlight some of the notable and intriguing Spring Training invitees from each organization.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/minors\/player.cgi?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;id=skipwo001kyl\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Skipworth<\/a><\/strong>, C:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 Selected 6<sup>th<\/sup> overall by the Marlins in the 2008 draft, it\u2019s hard not be optimistic about a 6-foot-4, left-handed hitting catcher.\u00a0 After posting disappointing numbers in his first two professional seasons, Skipworth took a step in the right direction in 2010 as he slashed .249\/.312\/.426 with 17 home runs and 59 RBI in 397 at-bats.\u00a0 However, he struck out 132 times compared to only 32 walks \u2013 a trend that intensified in Double-A in 2011.\u00a0 Playing for Jacksonville of the Southern League, Skipworth fanned 143 times and coaxed just 34 walks in 396 at-bats and saw his slash line drop to .207\/.273\/.331.\u00a0 Despite throwing out 23% of basestealers in 2011, he possesses sufficient arm strength and his game-calling abilities continue to improve.\u00a0 Skipworth will likely repeat Double-A in 2012, which will be a make-or-break year for the former first-rounder.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/minors\/player.cgi?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;id=mattis001kev\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Mattison<\/a><\/strong>*, OF:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Mattison enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2011 for Double-A Jacksonville, slashing .260\/.353\/.406 with 17 doubles, 16 triples, eight home runs, and 38 stolen bases.\u00a0 As one can infer from his stats, his best tool is his speed, which grades out as a legitimate double-plus and makes him an above-average defender in center.\u00a0 Like Skipworth, though, the left-handed hitting Mattison strikes out too much (127 times in 503 at-bats in 2011) and hits too many flyouts.\u00a0 And although he possesses tremendous speed he is far from a polished basestealer, as he was gunned down 16 times in 54 attempts last season.\u00a0 But after raking (.349) in the Arizona Fall League, Mattison was added to the Marlins\u2019 40-man roster and could potentially serve as the team\u2019s fourth outfielder at some point during the 2012 season.\u00a0 A 28<sup>th<\/sup> round selection out of UNC Asheville in 2008, Mattison is entering his age 26 season.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/minors\/player.cgi?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;id=jensen001kyl\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Jensen<\/a><\/strong>, OF:<\/strong><\/span> Jensen was named the Class A Florida State League MVP in 2011 after posting slashes of .309\/.385\/.535 with 20 doubles, 22 home runs and 66 RBI in 391 at-bats while playing for Jupiter.\u00a0 His performance garnered a late-season promotion to Double-A Jacksonville where he posted a .785 OPS with five bombs in 80 at-bats.\u00a0 At 6-foot-4, 230-pounds, Jensen has a lot of power and isn\u2019t afraid to cut it loose.\u00a0 So the fact that he showed a more patient approach last season as well as an ability to drive the ball to all fields is encouraging. Like Ricky Henderson, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/player_search.cgi?results=rossco01,ross--002cod&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker\" target=\"_blank\">Cody Ross<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/ludwiry01.shtml?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Ludwick<\/a><\/strong>, Jensen hits right-handed but throws with his left.\u00a0 If he turns in a strong performance at Double-A \u2013 and possibly Triple-A, too \u2013 Jenson\u2019s stock could rise over the course of the 2012 season.<\/p>\n<p>*<em>On team&#8217;s 40-man roster<\/em><br \/>\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; As Spring Training rapidly approaches and speculation surrounding the future of baseball\u2019s brightest prospects spreads like wildfire, The Golden Sombrero will highlight some of the notable and intriguing Spring Training invitees from each organization.
