{"id":369,"date":"2010-06-03T10:32:30","date_gmt":"2010-06-03T15:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/?p=369"},"modified":"2010-06-03T10:41:31","modified_gmt":"2010-06-03T15:41:31","slug":"slipping-under-the-radar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/archives\/369","title":{"rendered":"Slipping Under the Radar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\">June 3, 2010<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/axford_crop_340x234.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-370\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;\" title=\"axford_crop_340x234\" src=\"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/axford_crop_340x234-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a>June 1<sup>st<\/sup> is a big date in the Fantasy Baseball World.\u00a0 As <a href=\"search.espn.go.com\/matthew-berry\">TMR<\/a> alluded to in his article on <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\" target=\"_blank\">ESPN.com<\/a> earlier, it marks the opening of trade season.\u00a0 It is also about the time that you begin to have substantial enough data sets to start forming a solid opinion as to what kind of fantasy impact a player might have for your team.\u00a0 It is around this time that I really like to go find one or two guys for my team to replace that early season bust.\u00a0 On that note here are three guys who are available and worth more than just a look in most leagues and definitely in deeper or NL\/AL only leagues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>RP &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/players\/profile?playerId=28694\">Tyler Clippard<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/clubhouse?team=was\">Washington Nationals<\/a><br \/>\nERA: 1.82\u00a0 Whip: 1.07\u00a0 K: 40\u00a0\u00a0 IP: 34.2\u00a0 &#8211; Available in 60.4% of ESPN Leagues<\/p>\n<p>Tyler Clippard\u2019s problem is that he is playing in Washington and not named <a href=\"sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/news\/story\">Strasburg<\/a> or <a href=\"en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bryce_Harper\">Harper<\/a>.\u00a0 He is a 9<sup>th<\/sup> round pick out of high school in 2003 and just turned 25 in February.\u00a0 This is his 4<sup>th<\/sup> year with the big club.\u00a0 He holds a k\/bb ratio of 2.35, not bad for a guy who is racking up appearances(26 to be exact).\u00a0 He is also a great pick for vulture wins.\u00a0 Due to his role as the 6<sup>th<\/sup>, 7<sup>th<\/sup> or 8<sup>th<\/sup> inning guy, Clippard has been the benefactor of 7 wins.\u00a0 With Strasburg coming up on the 8<sup>th<\/sup>, it only means he will have more win opportunities, or even holds if your league plays that category.\u00a0 Now are these numbers sustainable?\u00a0 Here is why I say yes (and yes, I do own him on my fantasy roster right now).\u00a0 First he has a k\/9 rate of just over ten.\u00a0 That is powerful stuff right there my uninformed friend.\u00a0 Next, he holds an exceptionally low HR\/FB rate of 4.5%.\u00a0 To me, this says that even when guys are able to create some sort of lift on the ball; it is still not squared up, solid contact. \u00a0Top it off with the fact that he is throwing strikes 63% of the time, and you have legitimate RP filler.<\/p>\n<p>RP- <a href=\"sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/players\/profile\">John Axford<\/a>, <a href=\"sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/clubhouse\">Milwaukee Brewers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>ERA: 2.79\u00a0 Whip: 1.03 K: 14\u00a0 IP: 9.2\u00a0 Saves: 3 &#8211; Available in 80.6% of ESPN Leagues.<\/p>\n<p>People like to preach about not paying for saves and this is precisely why.\u00a0 John Axford now has two saves in consecutive opportunities, both in front of former closer, <a href=\"sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/players\/profile\">Trevor Hoffman<\/a>.\u00a0 Axford made his official debut as a September call-up last year.\u00a0 In his short time with the big club he has already shown what he is capable of with a colossal K\/9 rate of 13.03.\u00a0 In just 9.2 innings(29 outs total), 14 have come via the K- that\u2019s just under half of his outs.\u00a0 Also, his BABIP is at .312 and that is right around the league average.\u00a0 Based on these numbers (and the fact that he is putting his name in the hat for the closer role in a post Hoffman-era in Milwaukee) I\u00a0 think there are more saves to be had and no reason why that shouldn\u2019t hold up.\u00a0 I say a chance at 15-18 more saves the rest of the way.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>OF- <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/players\/profile?playerId=28574\">Fred Lewis<\/a>, <a href=\"sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/clubhouse\">Toronto Blue Jays<\/a><\/p>\n<p>AVG: .310\u00a0\u00a0 OBP: .344\u00a0\u00a0 SLG: .518 &#8211;
