{"id":3263,"date":"2011-03-15T15:55:23","date_gmt":"2011-03-15T20:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/?p=3263"},"modified":"2011-03-15T19:25:15","modified_gmt":"2011-03-16T00:25:15","slug":"prospect-buzz-michael-pineda-bryce-harper-mike-minor-zach-britton-and-jarrod-parker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/archives\/3263","title":{"rendered":"Prospect Buzz: Michael Pineda, Bryce Harper, Mike Minor, Zach Britton, and Jarrod Parker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/michaelpinedaminors.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3264\" title=\"michaelpinedaminors\" src=\"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/michaelpinedaminors-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/michaelpinedaminors-300x205.jpg 300w, http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/michaelpinedaminors.jpg 608w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Although the Seattle Mariners are still years away from any sort of contention, it appears as though they are <a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/marinersblog\/2014496575_mariners_sources_michael_pined.html\">seriously considering<\/a> breaking camp with the 22-year-old right-hander, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/minors\/player.cgi?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;id=pineda001mic\" target=\"_blank\">Michael  Pineda<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 Standing at an imposing 6-foot-7, 260-pounds, Pineda is widely considered to be one of baseball\u2019s best right-handed pitching prospects <a href=\"..\/archives\/2969\">(#17 on the Sombrero\u2019s Top 50<\/a>), and with a fastball that touches the upper-90s, one can understand why.\u00a0 So far this Spring, Pineda has posted a 2.57 ERA, struck out five, and walked three over seven innings of work.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fangraphs.com\/blogs\/index.php\/michael-pineda-making-the-mariner-rotation\/\">Matthew Carruth of Fangraphs<\/a>, however, including Pineda in the Opening Day rotation is not necessarily a wise decision\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Here at the Sombrero, there\u2019s no such thing as too much <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/minors\/player.cgi?id=harper002bry\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Bryce Harper<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 After an impressive Spring Training in which he hit .389 (7-for-18) with three doubles and five RBI, the Nationals assigned the 18-year-old to Class A Hagerstown on Saturday afternoon.\u00a0 Wanting to make the most of every Spring Training opportunity, Harper mentioned that he was feeling \u201chitterish\u201d the other day.\u00a0 What exactly does \u201chitterish\u201d mean? Well, it\u2019s a good thing that our friends at <a href=\"http:\/\/diamondhoggers.com\/\">Diamond Hoggers<\/a> are here to <a href=\"http:\/\/diamondhoggers.com\/2011\/03\/10\/bryce-harper-wants-to-know-if-youve-ever-felt-hitterish\/\">break it down<\/a> for everybody.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With rotations that are anything but solidified, both the Braves and Orioles are hoping that Spring Training will help to identify their respective fifth starters.\u00a0 For the Braves, it looks as though left-hander <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/minormi01.shtml?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker\" target=\"_blank\">Mike  Minor<\/a><\/strong> (<a href=\"..\/archives\/2899\">our #22 prospect<\/a>) might be the favorite to win the job.\u00a0 On Monday, the 23-year-old added to his already impressive Spring Training by hurling <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ajc.com\/atlanta-braves-blog\/2011\/03\/14\/beachy-minor-making-5th-starter-decision-difficult\/?cxntfid=blogs_atlanta_braves_blog\">five scoreless frames<\/a> against the St. Louis Cardinals.\u00a0 Minor has now surrendered just a single run in his 10 innings of work; he\u2019s scattered seven hits, walked four, and struck out seven.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Like Minor, Orioles\u2019 southpaw <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/minors\/player.cgi?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;id=britto001zac\" target=\"_blank\">Zachary  Britton<\/a><\/strong> has been exceptionally sharp in his first Spring Training. <a href=\"..\/archives\/2870\">The Sombrero\u2019s #25 prospect<\/a> is yet to allow a run in nine innings, and picked up a win over the Astros in his start on Saturday.\u00a0 With a rotation that already consists of youngsters like <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/matusbr01.shtml?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker\" target=\"_blank\">Brian  Matusz<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/arrieja01.shtml?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker\" target=\"_blank\">Jake  Arrieta<\/a><\/strong>, and with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duchsju01.shtml?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker\" target=\"_blank\">Justin  Duchscherer<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s hip on the fritz (once again), does it make sense for the Orioles to break camp with their best prospect?
