As only the fifth-rated prospect and second-rated pitcher in the Royals system, one might rush to wonder how Montgomery could possibly rank inside the Sombrero\u2019s top-25.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how: he deals.\u00a0 In twenty 2010 starts \u2013 13 of which came at the Double-A level \u2013 Montgomery threw up a 2.61 ERA while striking out nearly 3 guys per walk.\u00a0 And did this all while turning 21 about half-way through the season.<\/p>\n

At this pace it is easy to envision Montgomery cracking the 2011 rotation by September, and potentially starting on Opening Day by 2013 or so.\u00a0 He has that kind of upside.\u00a0 He stands 6\u20195\u201d and has a projectable, lean frame with length.\u00a0 He repeats his delivery very well.\u00a0 He throws across his body a tad, but it\u2019s not bad and only adds to his deception.<\/p>\n

Montgomery has an easy 60 fastball now that reaches the mid-90\u2019s.\u00a0 It honestly has a chance at few more ticks, which would boost it into the 65-70 range and make it one of the better left-handed fastballs in baseball.\u00a0 His best secondary offering is a changeup that works in the low-80\u2019s.\u00a0 It\u2019s a 60 today and a 65 at its peak.\u00a0 His breaker has a ways to go, but will be a solid average pitch by Montgomery\u2019s mid-20\u2019s.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s absolutely absurd that the Royals have a guy who ranks higher than Montgomery on the mound and even crazier that they have three hitters that are better than any pitcher in the system.<\/p>\n
