{"id":106,"date":"2010-04-11T15:14:32","date_gmt":"2010-04-11T20:14:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/?p=106"},"modified":"2010-05-09T04:21:04","modified_gmt":"2010-05-09T09:21:04","slug":"gallardo-a-steal-by-daniel-dee-clark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thegoldensombrero.com\/wordpress\/archives\/106","title":{"rendered":"Gallardo a Steal?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: right;\">April 11, 2010<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thegoldensombrero.com\/Images\/yovanni%20gallardo.jpg\" alt=\"gallardo\" width=\"187\" height=\"132\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brewers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Milwaukee<\/a> inked 24-year old <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/team\/player.jsp?player_id=451596\" target=\"_blank\">Yovanni Gallardo<\/a><\/strong> to a five-year deal worth a minimum of $30.1 million and potentially as much as $42.5 million.\u00a0 The deal could keep <strong>Gallardo<\/strong> a Brewer through 2015 if the club so chooses.\u00a0 The deal is really quite novel in that it provides both the <strong>Brewers<\/strong> and <strong>Gallardo<\/strong> a number of incentives, such as parameters regarding which teams Gallardo could potentially be traded to as well as bonuses based on Cy Young voting.\u00a0 While Cy Young voting is a rather subjective way of distributing payment, the clause at least provides the Brewers some level of merit-based control on their checkbook.\u00a0 Compared to the contracts awarded to a few of <strong>Gallardo<\/strong>\u2019s peers such as <strong>Justin Verlander<\/strong>, <strong>Tim Lincecum<\/strong>, <strong>Felix Hernandez<\/strong>, and <strong>Matt Cain<\/strong>, <strong>Jon Lester<\/strong>, and <strong>Zack Greinke<\/strong> this deal comes off looking rather genius for the <strong>Brewers<\/strong>.\u00a0 The question, though, lies in whether or not <strong>Gallardo <\/strong>can justify being considered a peer of these elite young righties.<\/p>\n<p>Last year <strong>Gallardo<\/strong> cracked the 200-strikeout milestone for the first time in his career while making 30 starts for the first time as well.\u00a0 Considering that he was coming off a season shortened by knee surgery in 2008, 2009 was a significant step in the right direction.\u00a0 He still failed to reach the 200-IP plateau, but in many ways I consider that a good thing for the <strong>Brewers <\/strong>considering they were fully aware that they would ultimately miss the playoffs relatively early in the season.\u00a0 Why not manage their young ace conservatively if he is basically just practicing for next year?<\/p>\n<p>How about his stuff?\u00a0 The wrap on <strong>Gallardo<\/strong> since he was a flame-throwing yet erratic high schooler has been that he lacks a developed third pitch.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure that remains the case.\u00a0 He still tends to favor his fastball (95+ whenever he needs it)\/curve (at least plus, sometimes plus-plus) duo, but his changeup has made considerable strides since <strong>Gallardo <\/strong>reached the Bigs in 2007.\u00a0 Still, he does not use it enough.\u00a0 <strong>Gallardo<\/strong>\u2019s high \u00be release point and carry on his fastball, when coupled with Miller\u2019s short porch, tend to drive a lot of balls to the seats, but that same carry allows <strong>Gallardo<\/strong> to pitch at the letters a little more often, especially to righties, in order to generate strike 3.<\/p>\n<p>Delivery?\u00a0 It sounds like <strong>Milwaukee<\/strong> extensively analyzed <strong>Gallardo<\/strong>\u2019s delivery to determine if anything about it would lead to career-threatening injuries later on.\u00a0 From the sounds of it, <strong>Gallardo<\/strong> checked out nicely.\u00a0 Personally, I think he fights to create a downward plane more than someone with his build and athleticism should, &#8211;
