The Baseball Show: Damon & Manny, Vernon Wells, KC Royals, Owings, Harper, Trout and more…

Today on The Baseball Show, co-host Clint Evans of Diamond Hoggers and I discuss recent trades and headlines across baseball, and even seamlessly weave in a Brooks Kieschnick reference.  The Mike Napoli trade gives us a reason to remember Frank Francisco hurling a chair into a dude’s face at the Oakland Coliseum.  I guess a picture really does say a thousand words in certain situations. You know, those situations when you’re a Major League bullpen pitcher and a fight (with fans) breaks out, calms down, and you decide to start tossing chairs at helpless spectators. White Sox News: Sale to start, Floyd/Rockies, Brent Morel, and Johnny Damon

Despite reports that Jake Peavy is ahead of schedule in his rehab, Chris Sale is preparing to be the White Sox 5th starter in 2010…..Sale has begun a conditioning program to build endurance and strengthen his legs…..he needs a defined role headed into 2010…..bouncing between the rotation and bullpen will only stunt his development. [Chicago Breaking Sports]

Kenny Williams has stated that Brent Morel will likely be the White Sox third baseman in 2010…..while he may not have the power of Dayan Viciedo, Morel is a superb defender with gap power…..Ozzie believes he has a better glove than both Joe Crede and Robin Ventura…..Viciedo could potentially fill a void at 1B if they don’t re-sign Konerko or another free agent. Paul Konerko: one of the most respected players in the game

“You play for your teammates’ and your staff’s respect.  I definitely care about the guys inside this clubhouse, what they think. Not too much beyond that. It’s nice, I guess, if people have that, but at the same time I think I know who’s important to me and hopefully I gain those people. If not, you work to get that.” – Paul Konerko

It is the statements like the one above that have made Paul Konerko such a vastly respected player, teammate and individual throughout his 13-year career in Major League Baseball.  It seems that there cannot be enough great things said about the Chicago White Sox first baseman who, in an era rich with egotistical baseball players, has remained admirably humble.

To highlight Konerko’s influence on both his organization and the game itself, here are a collection of quotes from his coaches, teammates and other players around the league.

LaRoche, Hawpe Clear Waivers – Are White Sox Interested?

On Wednesday, left-handed power hitters Adam LaRoche and Brad Hawpe cleared waivers and it appears that they will be traded in the coming days.  Although neither the Arizona Diamondbacks nor Colorado Rockies seem close to a deal involving either player, there are several organizations that will undoubtedly express interest.

The fact that LaRoche was placed on waivers should come as no surprise as the Diamondbacks openly expressed his availability, as well as anybody not named Reynolds or Upton, during July’s trading frenzy.  Prior to the 2010 season, the Diamondbacks signed LaRoche to one year, $4.5 million contract that has a $7.5 million mutual option for 2011, and would increase to a $9.5 mutual option if he is traded.  The Diamondbacks also have the ability to buy out LaRoche’s contract for $1.5 million.
