Classic Sports Illustrated Covers: 2005 Chicago White Sox

Happy 5th anniversary to the 2005 World Series Champions: Chicago White Sox .  As a White Sox fan, October 26, 2005 marks one of the greatest days in my life, and is all but a distant memory. I remember exactly where I was when I watched each game of the World Series against the Astros.  That includes being lucky enough to watch Game 1 from the upper-deck, down the right field line.  Despite the fact that I had knee surgery a few days before — I was even pushed around U.S. Cellular Field in a wheel chair — it was easily the greatest baseball game that I have ever attended.  To this day, I have never seen a third baseman play the position like Joe Crede did that night.

Classic Sports Illustrated Covers: Tony Gwynn

The baseball world received some unfortunate news on Saturday morning.  According to ESPN, Hall of Famer and lifelong San Diego Padres outfielder Tony Gwynn is battling cancer of the salivary gland.  Everyone at The Sombrero wishes Tony nothing but best in his recovery.

I remember exactly where I was when Tony Gwynn ripped hit #3000.  To honor him, here are Gwynn’s appearances on the cover of Sports Illustrated:

Classic Sports Illustrated Covers: Trevor Hoffman’s 600th save (video)

On Tuesday night Trevor Hoffman reached the remarkable milestone of 600 saves when the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 at Miller Park.  Hoffman has always been regarded as a class act and has solidified himself as a Hall of Famer well before last night’s achievement.

The Golden Sombrero congratulates Trevor Hoffman on his unparalleled, 600th career save.
