The Golden Sombrero’s Top 50 Prospects: #15 – Wil Myers (Video)

#15 Wil Myers – Kansas City Royals

C/OF

DOB: 12-10-90

ETA: 2013

Myers was recently and quite publicly moved from catcher to the outfield, a move that we at the Sombrero would probably not have made.  Nevertheless, his bat convinced the organization that a move would allow him to reach 600 plate appearances more consistently and more quickly.  As the second-best hitting prospect in the top organization in baseball, Myers smashed his way to a .315/.429/.506 line at two stops in 2010, finishing the year up at High Class A Wilmington.  He crushed 54 XBH’s in only 447 AB’s and will likely begin the year in right field at Double-A.

Myers’ arm graded at plus behind the plate and probably will be at least that in the outfield.  His footwork behind the plate likely would have never allowed him to be anything more than average as a backstop, but average catchers who rake are essentially impossible to find, which is why we would have preferred to see him remain at catcher.

Regardless, Myers’ bat is likely no more than two years away from being Major League-ready.  His eye is the best one in the Royals’ system and far beyond what is expected of a 20-year-old, and his power will develop into at least a plus.  He could definitely have a few 30-bomb seasons in his future.  His plate coverage is ridiculous, and he runs very well for a catcher/corner guy.  There is very little not to love about Myers, and he should be joining Dwyer, Duffy, Montgomery, Lamb, Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer in Kansas City within the next couple of seasons.  Get ready Royals fans.

Funky but seemingly effortless swing. I’m excited to see him in the bigs.

Great post Dr. Dee but I do have one question about a phrase you used…

“As the second-best hitting prospect in the top organization in baseball”

You really think so?!?!? Thanks! hahah

I would assume that he meant the top farm system in baseball.

I think it’s a safe bet that the Royals’ will have either the Minor League Player or Pitcher of the Year.

Ya I figured due to the Royals current suckiness.
